The Quarter Stitch--New Orleans, LA

Last weekend I attended the joint conference of the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA) located in New Orleans, LA.  I enjoyed four days of the conference--attending presentations and meetings, receptions and get-togethers, and I of course visited a local yarn store.  Before I left for NOLA I googled about the different LYS in the area and I discovered that The Quarter Stitch was located in the French Quarter AND was in walking distance from my hotel.  Perfect!!  So on the last day of my trip I decided to do some exploring and wandered into the French Quarter to The Quarter Stitch.

The store is open every day from 11am to 6 pm and I happened to arrive a little before it opened and the woman opening that day was surprised to see someone waiting for her to open the store.  One of my favorite parts was the knitting/needlepoint post that stood outside the store, welcoming customers in.

It really was beautiful inside--there was a lot of yarn everywhere and it was in all different colors!  The sales woman was nice enough to let me take some photos in the store and I'm very please to share them! The store also has many needlepoint things for sale, but I wasn't allowed to photograph them since they are copyrighted.

My mom remarked that this wall of colorful yarn resembled part of my yarn stash that "lives" in my bedroom :).

Of course after looking at all of this wonderful yarn, I had to buy some!  I decided on two skeins of Malabrigo Rios in the color way 866 Arco Iris that remind me of NOLA and one skein of Colinette Jitterbug in lilac (which is a yarn I never saw before, but apparently is popular).  I'll have pictures of the yarn soon :).  I also purchased a project bag for one of my very dear friends (KnittyLindsey).  At The Quarter Stitch they wrap each purchase--each skein and the project bag in my case--separately in different colored tissue paper and then put them in a clear plastic bag.  The bag has little tissue paper hearts in it and very cute business cards for the store.  It is all tied closed with multi-colored curling ribbon.  This probably was my prettiest yarn purchase to date!!

I also wanted to share some of my general NOLA photographs :).  This is a picture of the view from my hotel.  It shows the Mississippi River and part of the French Quarter Festival that was also going on at the same time as the conference.

This is a picture of Bourbon Street (of course).  It was jam-packed with people.  It was interesting to see people standing in the balconies in the buildings on the street tossing down beads.

There were different musical groups performing all over the French Quarter.  I found it to be really fun to have all different types of live music all around--and boy, did they really draw a crowd!

On my last day I decided to go exploring and visit The Quarter Stitch.  Since I arrived a bit early before the store opened, I just walked around the French Quarter snapping away.  Here is a man who is painting; I just love how much color he uses in his artwork!

This is a picture of the St. Louis Cathedral that is located right near Jackson Square.  It is so beautifully breathtaking to see it in person--massive and white, standing majestically in the French Quarter.

One of my favorite parts of NOLA was the balconies with the beautiful railings.  I just love the detail of the iron work (I think it is iron work....) :).

I also really like the quaint little shops that you find on all of the streets.  The area just seems so small and the entrances to stores are small as well.  I am guessing that is because the buildings are so old :).  I just really liked the set up of this little store.

So overall I enjoyed my extended weekend trip to New Orleans.  The food was delicious (though very rich) and the atmosphere was fun.  I learned a lot at the conference and I'm filled with positive energy--definitely a good boost to get working more on my dissertation!!! (And I can't wait to knit and crochet with my new yarn!!!)

NYC HDR

So I recently learned about a program to create HDR photographs.  HDR stands for high dynamic range and has to do with allowing a greater difference between the light and dark areas of a photograph.  It can be created from using multiple images shot at different exposures and then mapping them together or it can be done with software like NIK HDR (which is what I've been playing with).

I only have a 15 day trial, but I've really enjoyed it so far.  Obviously I need to work on getting the HDR better, but here are some samples I've worked on.

Some first week of January 2011 snow!

When it snows I think everything looks like frosted cupcakes :).  It snowed the other day again, but not nearly like the "Blizzard of 2010."  So armed with my new camera bag (holds my camera and stuff like my wallet and keys hooray!) I ventured out to run a few errands.  I of course snapped a bunch of pictures along the way!

The fire hydrant looked like a snow cone :).  I loved the way the yellow looks against the snow!

The winter sky looks so beautiful!

I think this snowman is extra frosty!  However, I don't think he really minds at all!

Little lights in the snow...I wonder if they get cold at all?  It is nice to see some bright colors against the wintery background!

Picnic time anyone?  We'll be serving snow cones and ice cream!

Part of a tree exists among the ice and pavement.

The sky is beautiful!  The garbage can looks like a dessert!

Feet :) in snow boots.

The orange snow warriors line up, ready to go to battle!

In the distance, the city exists in a wintery wonderland.

Careful while crossing, it might be icy!

I love the way the snow sparkles....

We're supposed to get another storm Tuesday into Wednesday...hopefully I'll get a chance to take some more photos!

Blizzard 2010

Right before 2010 ended, NJ was hit by a blizzard...I think we got like 25 inches of snow.  Here are some photos I took the night before the snow ended....

The view from my front door...that's my neighbor's car and our stairs...which don't look much like stairs at the moment.

This is what I saw as I opened my door....

Notice the snow still falling?

One of the doors to the laundry room the day after.

That garage at the end is mine...yep, my car is in there.  I don't own a shovel, so I had to wait for my complex to finally un-plow-me-in.

It got really windy that night.  As I went for a walk the snow was blowing everywhere!!

Our town plowed semi-well......

Christmas decorating 2010

I love the holidays, some years more than others, but overall I love the holidays.  I like to decorate my apartment and just make it as festive as possible!  Right now it smells like pine because I have all different sorts of pine smelling things!!

This year, I decided to make myself a wreath for my door.  I went to Michaels and got a wreath (artificial), two packs of decorative balls on wire, and a nice purple sparkling bow.

After about 30 minutes of careful placing of balls and twisting wires this was the result.  I'm quite happy with it and it now lives on my front door :).

I usually get a bunch of new ornaments each year.  Here are some from this year.

Found these cute bulb looking ornaments at Target along with the candy cane and the wooden owl :).

My Aunt Cathy knows I love owls and picked this up for me.  It is soooo cute!

At the NJ Sheep and Wool Festival in September I picked up this little guy.  It is made from actual fleece :)!

Everyone needs a bear in a scarf :).

Just a pretty colored metal snow flake with bells!  I like the jingling sound!

For Thanksgiving, my Aunt Cathy set each place setting with an angel ornament.  I love it and she is living happily on my tree.

Then I decorate the top of my book cases with various Christmas-ness.  The white bear with the pink hat and scarf is actually dipped in wax that smells like pine.  My mom bought it for me and it smells very good!!

Here is my tree...much better pictures coming soon!  (When I get some time to properly take them).  Even though it is hard to see, I made the bow on top of my tree!

This is the Nativity under my tree.  It is all crocheted, but I didn't make this.  My mom bought it for me a few years ago at a craft fair before I ever had made amigurumi :).

Once I finish school for the semester, I will post better pictures (aka hopefully more artistic) photos of my decorations!! :)
